Impeachment Makes Clear: Time for a Trump-Free New Party

-

The House Democrats made their case brilliantly and effectively.  They proved the facts and proved that an impeachable offense was committed.  But Trump will be acquitted because the Republican base will not tolerate any other outcome, and very few Republican elected officials have the courage to defy the MAGA mob.  But there are a few Republican office holders willing to do the right thing.

This case is simple.  The President incited insurrection.  There is no First Amendment protection for this.  And history and precedent destroy the argument that the Senate cannot convict the President after he leaves office. But most Republicans will not face these facts.  They will continue to allow Trump and Trumpism to dominate the Republican party.

The question – the big question – is what will the few remaining principled Republicans do in response to this travesty?  What will Sen. Mitt Romney, Sen. Ben Sasse, Rep. Liz Cheney, and Washington state’s two principled Republican representatives, Jaimie Herrera-Beutler and Dan Newhouse, do? I don’t know what they will do, but I know that they should leave the Republican party.  For the protection of democracy and our constitution, the Republican party should split.

Many, many Republicans have already left the Trump GOP.  Many of us are in discussions about the possibility of creating a new party, or a new political faction. When the majority of Republican Senators again choose to put Trump before country, Republican Governors, Senators, and House members should join this movement.  It is time for something new.

  1. It’s a great idea, if you are a Democrat…….But a better approach might be to forget Trump, run candidates for congress that are aware of issues on the ground, populists like Bernie.
Trump WAS a phenomenon that was fortunate to win against a candidate of the “Liberal Elite” , BUT lost to one that displayed a humanism not often found.
