A single issue, Covid, is likely to determine the 2020 Presidential election. Despite all the tweets, campaign ads, and press releases, votersโ opinions on Covid have proved remarkably stable. The most recent CNN/SSRS poll showed that 52 percent of likely voters concur with the statement โI donโt want to die of Covid,โ while 44 percent agree with โThere are things worth dying for. Covid is one of them.โ
Nationwide poll numbers have changed little since March 2020. โAnticoโ voters, those desiring not to die, have consistently exceeded 50 percent. โProcoโ voters, who contend that Covid is worth dying for, have never surpassed 47 percent.
However, statewide poll numbers vary wildly, reflecting a polarized electorate. The success of the Proco ad, โDonโt mask. If Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and William Travis had feared death, we would be Mexicans today,โ has pushed โworth dying forโ to 76 percent in Texas. In contrast, 89 percent of Washington State voters prefer not to die of Covid, provoking President Donald Trump to tweet that โWashingtonians, like all anarchists, are cowards, wusses, and wimps.โ
