A single issue, Covid, is likely to determine the 2020 Presidential election. Despite all the tweets, campaign ads, and press releases, voters’ opinions on Covid have proved remarkably stable. The most recent CNN/SSRS poll showed that 52 percent of likely voters concur with the statement “I don’t want to die of Covid,” while 44 percent agree with “There are things worth dying for. Covid is one of them.”
Nationwide poll numbers have changed little since March 2020. “Antico” voters, those desiring not to die, have consistently exceeded 50 percent. “Proco” voters, who contend that Covid is worth dying for, have never surpassed 47 percent.
However, statewide poll numbers vary wildly, reflecting a polarized electorate. The success of the Proco ad, “Don’t mask. If Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and William Travis had feared death, we would be Mexicans today,” has pushed “worth dying for” to 76 percent in Texas. In contrast, 89 percent of Washington State voters prefer not to die of Covid, provoking President Donald Trump to tweet that “Washingtonians, like all anarchists, are cowards, wusses, and wimps.”
