Pope Francis has delivered a pointed, pastoral rebuke to conservative bishops in Americaโs Catholic hierarchy who threaten to deny communion to President Biden because the nationโs second Catholic president supports abortion rights.
The Pope had a long chat with reporters during a return flight from Slovakia to Rome. He was asked about the communion flap in the United States. โI have never refused the eucharist to anyone,โ Pope Francis replied, although noting that he has never been approached at the altar rail by a pro-choice politician.
Addressing a broader question, the proposed weaponizing of the communion wafer, Francis stressed that priests and bishops should act as pastors. โAnd what should pastors do?โ he asked. โBe pastors, and not go condemning, condemning.โ
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is split but with a strong conservative presence.ย A statement issued by USCCB chairman Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, at Bidenโs inauguration, rebuked the 46thย president for pursuing โcertain policies that could advance moral evils.โย In turn, Chicago Cardinal Blasรฉ Cupich rebuked Gomez for his โill consideredโ statement.
Pope Francis delivered a warning while winging home to Rome from Bratislava. โWhenever the church, in order to defend a principle, didnโt do it pastorally, it has taken political sides,โ he said. โIf a pastor leaves the pastorality of the church, he immediately becomes a politician.โ
The pontiff repeated his definition that โcommunion is not a prize for the perfectโ but instead a โgift of the presence of Christ in the church.โ He argued earlier this summer that โthe eucharist is not the reward of saints but the bread of sinners.โ
Francis did not move far from church doctrine.ย He described abortion as โhomicide,โ adding โIt is a human life. This human life must be respected โ this principle is so clear.โ
Conservative prelates in the United States are clearly not in communion with the popeโs position on the eucharist, or the warm greetings he extended to Biden in a call last January. Arch conservative San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone stated recently: โBecause we are dealing with public figures and public examples of cooperation in moral evil, this correction can take the public form of exclusion from receiving holy communion.โ
Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, who heads USCCBโs pro-life work, has said of Biden: โHow can he say heโs a devout Catholic and heโs doing these things that are contrary to the churchโs teachings.โ
Pope Francis was in a talkative mood Wednesday. He argued that states should pass legislation guaranteeing health coverage and inheritance rights to same-sex couples.ย โMarriage is marriage: That doesnโt mean condemning people who are like this. No, please. They are our brothers and sisters and we must accompany them.โ
The Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle has never faced the communion issue: An active pro-choice Catholic, Attorney General Bob Ferguson, on Wednesday filed an amicus brief challenging Texasโ new law that bans almost all abortions.
But the Seattle Archdiocese has come under fire for opposition to LGBTQ rights. Two high schools, Eastside Catholic and John F. Kennedy, have witnessed forced resignations of gay and lesbian faculty. Hundreds of students and parents from each school protested outside the diocesan chancery. The state legalized same-sex marriage with support from a Catholic governor, Christine Gregoire. When then-Archbishop J. Peter Sartain campaigned against the 2012 marriage equality referendum, more than 500 supporters of same-sex marriage rallied outside St. James Cathedral.
Pope Francis also reiterated his strong support for vaccination against the COVID-19 pandemic, saying โhumanity has a history of friendship with vaccines.โ (Cardinal Raymond Burke, a leading anti-vaxxer in the Catholic Church, was recently hospitalized with COVID-19.)
The Pope is beginning to leave his mark on the conservative American hierarchy.ย He has named progressive cardinals in Chicago, Newark and Washington, D.C.:ย Cupich was elevated from his previous posting as Bishop of Spokane.ย Such luminaries of the Catholic right as Gomez and Philadelphiaโs longtime Archbishop Charles Chaput have pointedly not received red hats, although their dioceses have been traditionally headed by cardinals.

As I understand my catholic upbringing, you can’t be devout and be pro-choice – You can be a practicing , just not devout. Don’t recollect Biden ever saying he was devout (only Pelosi).
The pope IS very clear when he refers to “It’s homicide”. So like everything in life, if you don’t like the message start another wing of the group and become a newer more modern church.
Like Phil says. So Joel if you want to be fair why not put Pope Francis’s statement on abortion issued today. I’ll watch for it.
The Eucharist has always puzzled me, not only now as an apostate of many decades, but even as a confused kid when that wafer got stuck to my tongue. If this was truly the body of Christ, wasnโt I committing cannibalism? If one believes in transubstantiation, as Catholic doctrine prescribes and many Catholics (Francis?) believe, do they also believe they are dining on someoneโs flesh? So this is okay? The blood of sinners? Chow down.
God said so (as divinely interpreted by His one true Catholic Church) then just do it. Don’t overthink because no one can fathom the wisdom of God.
Remember Jesus said Take this and eat this is my body” before he died. If you remove the Last Supper from the Sacrament of the Eucharist you are deaf to the words said at every mass “mystery” Don’t look at it like an MD. Or an anthropologist. It’s a mystery commissioned by Christ when he was ALIVE
