This time, impeachment managers had something they didn’t have a year ago: optics. The amazing, appalling, disgusting pictures of the Capitol rioters. Links to videos of Donald Trump’s speeches and replicas of his tweets. Images of the blood-up rioters. All this made for riveting evidence that would convict the former president — if the jury was made up of ordinary citizens.
We saw the faces of hatred, violence, and blind allegiance to a leader that could only be called a cult. But that would be too kind. Hillary got it right: we saw the Deplorables; on September 9, 2016, she described what we saw this week:
“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right?” Clinton said. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”
